Cycloidal vs Planetary Gear Reducer: Which One Do You Need?

Cycloidal and planetary reducers both deliver high ratios in a compact, coaxial package. Buyers often treat them as interchangeable and then wonder why one unit lasts fifteen years in a crusher while the other fails in two. The difference is in how the load is shared — and it decides which machine each type belongs on.

How each one works, briefly

Cycloidal (pin-wheel) reducer — an eccentric cam makes a cycloidal disc wobble inside a ring of pins. The number of pins and lobes sets the ratio. Power is transmitted through a large number of pins at once, spread over a big contact area.

Planetary reducer — a sun gear drives several planet gears inside a ring gear. Load is shared between the planets, and stages can be stacked to reach very high ratios.

Choose cycloidal when…

  • Shock loading is normal. Crushers, mixers with hard lumps, feeder drives, winches — cycloidal units tolerate impact because load is shared over many pins rather than concentrated on a few teeth.
  • You need a big ratio without a big price. A single cycloidal stage covers 1:9 to 1:87 cheaply.
  • Speeds are low and the environment is rough. Cycloidal reducers are far less fussy about lubrication quality and mounting accuracy.
  • Backlash is not critical. If the machine does not need to hold an exact angular position, cycloidal is the economical answer.

WGT supplies the full range of B/X series cycloidal reducers in BLD, BWD, XLD and XWD configurations.

Choose planetary when…

  • Accuracy and low backlash matter. Servo-driven positioning, indexing tables, robot axes, CNC equipment.
  • Torque density is the constraint. A planetary unit fits high torque into a small envelope, which is why it dominates mobile and aerospace machinery.
  • Efficiency counts. Continuous running at 250 kW makes the 5–10 percentage point efficiency gap expensive.
  • You need very high ratios in a small package. Stacking three planetary stages gives 1:4,000 in a compact coaxial housing.

See our P series planetary units and the 2-stage and 3-stage ranges.

The mistake to avoid

The common error is specifying a planetary unit for a shock-loaded application because it is smaller and looks more modern. Planetary gears concentrate load on a small number of teeth at any instant; a jam or a hard start can crack a planet gear, and that gives no warning and no cheap repair.

Conversely, specifying a cycloidal unit for a servo axis is equally wrong. Its backlash and lower torsional stiffness make accurate positioning impossible — no amount of tuning fixes a mechanical limitation.

A simple rule

  • Shock, jam, coarse load, low speed, tight budget → cycloidal
  • Precision, low backlash, efficiency, small envelope → planetary
  • Both, on the same machine → match the reducer to the duty of each axis, not to the whole plant

If you are unsure, give WGT the motor power, output speed, shock description and any backlash requirement, and we will tell you honestly which family suits — including when the answer is a helical-worm combination instead. Start at the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cycloidal reducer replace a planetary one?
Only if backlash and size are not constraints. The mounting dimensions almost never match, so a rework of the mounting plate is usually needed.

Is planetary always more expensive?
At equal torque and equal quality, usually yes. At equal ratio, a well-made cycloidal unit is often cheaper.

Which gives longer life?
Under shock loads, cycloidal. Under smooth continuous loads, planetary, because of its higher efficiency and lower heat.
