The M3PVSF50 vertical industrial gear unit is the size 50 member of the vertical parallel-shaft family: three helical stages, flanged or footed mounting on a horizontal face, and a solid vertical output shaft pointing down into the process. It exists because a great many drives in heavy process plants are simply vertical by nature - an agitator shaft entering the top of a tank, a fan stack on a roof, an elevator boot below a silo - and a horizontal reducer bolted to a bracket cannot serve them without an extra bevel pair or a belt drive. Mounting the reduction directly on the vertical axis removes that entire intermediate stage.
A vertical unit is not a horizontal unit stood on its end. Lubrication behaves differently, because oil has to climb rather than sit in a sump, and the top bearing of a vertical machine carries an axial load that a horizontal bearing never sees. The size 50 vertical build addresses both: an oil pump or splash arrangement feeds the upper stages, and the output bearing is selected for the combined thrust of the driven shaft plus the weight of the agitator or impeller hanging below it. That is why the terminal box, breather and oil level plug on a vertical frame are positioned for a different service posture than on a foot-mounted horizontal unit of the same gear centres.
| M | Industrial gear unit family, three-stage band |
| P | Parallel-shaft helical gearing; an R in this position would mean a right-angle bevel first stage |
| V | Vertical mounting position, output shaft on a vertical axis |
| S | Solid output shaft, keyed; an H would give a hollow through bore |
| F | Foot or flange mounting on a horizontal face |
| 50 | Frame size within the vertical range |
Reading the code from left to right tells you the gear train, the mounting posture, the shaft form and the frame size before any drawing is opened. Two letters are usually enough to rule a unit in or out of a layout.
Three stages of case-hardened, ground helical gearing share the reduction. Because helical teeth engage gradually along their face width rather than all at once, the drive runs with low vibration and a noise level that suits indoor process buildings; the overlapping contact also spreads load across several teeth at any instant, which keeps the gearing compact for the torque it carries. Efficiency stays high through the whole train, so a vertical drive of this kind does not dump heat into the tank head or the roof structure the way a sliding-contact worm set would at the same ratio.
Three things decide whether a vertical unit will run for years or fail early. The first is the direction of the axial load: an agitator pushing down on the shaft and a fan pulling up load the output bearing in opposite senses. The second is the oil system: a unit that starts and stops frequently needs a lubrication arrangement that reaches the upper bearings immediately. The third is the interface: whether the driven shaft couples to a keyed solid shaft below the unit, or passes right through a hollow bore. Send the shaft detail, the axial load direction and the mounting face drawing, and the frame can be fixed without guesswork.
Ratio, nominal torque, output shaft dimensions and mounting bolt pattern are confirmed against the actual duty point before a unit is released. Mounting position, oil grade for the ambient temperature and the coupling or shaft connection are agreed at the same time, so the drawing set and the delivered unit match. Use the online selection system to sketch the duty point, or send the process data for a written proposal.
Take a 22 kW motor at 1470 rpm turning an agitator shaft at 35 rpm. The ratio follows directly: 1470 / 35 = 42, so a ratio near i=42 is taken from the three-stage band and the frame is then checked against the agitator thrust load. In this case the vertical output shaft couples straight down onto the agitator shaft, so the drive sits on the tank head instead of on a steel bracket with a belt drive. The same three numbers - motor speed, target output speed, required torque - are all you need; our engineers (or the online selector below) cross-check the service factor for your duty cycle.

| M3PSF70 | size 70 | solid shaft, foot | ball mills, shredders |
| M3PSF80 | size 80 | solid shaft, foot | kilns, heavy conveyors |
| M3PSF90 | size 90 | solid shaft, foot | mill and kiln drives |
| M3RSF50 | size 50 | solid shaft, foot, right-angle | inclined conveyors, elevators |
| M3RSF60 | size 60 | solid shaft, foot, right-angle | screw classifiers, feeders |
| M3RHF70 | size 70 | hollow shaft, foot, right-angle | agitators, drum drives |
| M3PHT80 | size 80 | hollow shaft, torque arm, parallel | shaft-mounted conveyors |
| M3RHT90 | size 90 | hollow shaft, torque arm, right-angle | heavy shaft-mounted drives |
The table below shows the M3 industrial range: P builds are all-helical on parallel axes, R builds add a bevel input stage for a right-angle drive; S / H describe the low-speed shaft and F / T the mounting.
An airport baggage-handling integrator uses reducers on check-in conveyors. Thousands of start-stop cycles a day are absorbed without overheating, and the low noise level matters in a public terminal.
A quarry operator fits industrial gear units on its primary jaw crusher feeders. The shock of rock dumped straight from the haul truck is covered by the service factor, and the cast-iron housing shrugs off years of dust and vibration.

Figure: typical industries that use the WGT S-series gear reducers.
Housings are gasket-sealed with labyrinth or lip seals at both shafts as standard. Dusty plants, washdown areas and outdoor installations are covered by coating and sealing options specified together with the order.
The horizontally split housing opens along the shaft centreline, so gearing and bearings can be examined without removing the unit from its foundation. Covers give access to the oil galleries and bearing seats during service.
Yes. Vertical builds of the same industrial family cover the smaller size band and are common on vertical mixers, agitators and clarifier drives. State the orientation when ordering so oil levels and breathers are set correctly.
