Every catalogue has a line where the standard range tops out, and plant engineers learn to read that line carefully. The MC3RLHF09 bevel-helical gearbox is the largest frame of the hollow-bore, foot-mounted band - the point where serious process torque is still handled by a unit a plant's own crew can receive, lift and fit without hiring the job out. Beyond it, drives become engineered specials with fabricated bases and project schedules of their own. This page is about the frame that keeps heavy duties inside the standard range.

The train is the familiar three-stage arrangement - a bevel pair turning the input through a right angle, two helical stages reducing speed, the output a hollow bore that mounts over the driven shaft from a footed case. What the ninth frame adds is scale: bearings with genuine reserve, an oil volume with real thermal patience, and a case mass that damps vibration a lighter unit would borrow from its foundations. On duties with shock, dust and long hours, that mass is doing quiet work every shift.

The Ceiling of the Standard Range

Ratios overlap across the band, so many duties can be met by either the eighth frame or the ninth. The honest tie-breaker is the worst hour of the plant's year, not the average hour of a good week: the restart against a belt settled overnight, the surge when a chute slumps, the summer shift when the gallery air is warm and thick with dust. Where those hours land beyond the eighth frame's comfort, the ninth takes them without complaint - and stays a catalogue item, ordered on a form rather than negotiated as a project.

Above the ninth, the character of the purchase changes. Fabricated bases, torque arms, engineered lift plans and weeks of correspondence become the norm, and the drive arrives as one line item in a much longer document. Staying inside the standard range where the duty honestly allows it is a decision worth making deliberately - the schedules it saves are the project's own.

Plant That Belongs on the Ninth Frame

Duties whose reserves begin at the ninth frame:

  • Overland conveyor heads spanning kilometres between pit and plant
  • Sinter machine drives in an integrated steelworks bay
  • Rotary air preheater drives at a power station
  • Caster-area slag conveyors at a steel melting shop
  • Chipper infeed conveyors at a timber panel mill
  • Heavy scraper chains across a raw material blend bed

What links that list is mass in motion over distance. An overland head pulley carries a kilometre of belting and everything on it; a sinter machine never truly stops once the furnace is lit; a preheater turns a recuperator the size of a house at a speed too slow to see and too stubborn to interrupt. These are the duties the ninth frame's reserves were drawn for.

Margins You Feel at Commissioning

The frame's reserve shows itself in the first hour of running, to anyone watching. The first jog of the motor takes up the train with a single firm note instead of a shudder. The loaded start draws current that falls away cleanly rather than hovering near the trip. Within four loaded hours the case temperature settles at a figure the commissioning sheet can honestly record as a baseline - and every reading taken in the years after has that number to be judged against.

Those first-day observations are worth writing down precisely because a ninth frame rarely misbehaves early. The unit that is slightly wrong - a pad not levelled, an oil level a little low, an overhang the rating never saw - runs politely for a season before it mentions the matter. The commissioning record is what turns that polite delay into an early diagnosis instead of a surprise.

Foundations, Shims and the Long Level

A case of this mass is honest about the foundation it stands on, in the way heavy things always are. The plinth is checked for level before the unit arrives, the pads are brought true with shims in the diagonal sequence, and the holding-down bolts are pulled to torque only after the case is sitting - not hanging - on all four corners. Grout that bridges a gap properly does the rest, and a re-torque of the bolts after the first month of running closes the job.

The failures that come from skipping that sequence read, later, like factory faults: fretting at the bore, a seal that weeps on one side, a crack in the paint at a pad corner. All three are the case telling the story of a shim left out or a bolt pulled against an unleveled pad. Ten minutes of levelling writes a different and much shorter story.

Reading the Code Before the Crane Arrives

By the ninth frame, the delivery day deserves a plan as considered as the installation. The type string on the nameplate tells the receiving crew most of what they need - and one line of it, the frame number, sets the tone for the whole day.

MCIndustrial gear-unit family for continuous plant service
3Three-stage train: bevel pair at the input, two helical reductions after it
RRight-angle geometry that parks the motor where the aisle and access want it
LHorizontal build: both shafts level, feet flat on the plinth
HHollow output bore that mounts over the driven shaft - no coupling in the line
FFoot mounting with hardware to the frame drawing
09Ninth frame: crate mass and lifting points call for a written lift plan

Beyond the string, the outline drawing carries the decisions that never appear in the code: which face takes the motor, where the breather must present itself, whether a second shaft end is wanted for an accessory, which rotation direction the first jog must produce. Each is settled on paper before the crate opens - none can be settled by the fitter on the day.

Heat, Dust and the Economics of Cooling

A large sump buys patience, not immunity. Beside a furnace bay, under a sunlit roof or in a underground gallery, the thermal check is run at the corner's true ambient, and the remedies rank honestly by cost. Moving the breather out of the dust stream is free. Directing a fan of air across the case is a bracket and a cable. Raising the oil grade for the season is a purchase order. A cooling coil or forced circulation is the step after those - and it is rarely reached when the first three have been taken seriously.

Dust works the opposite side of the same ledger. A case furred with grime holds its heat in exactly where the unit can least afford it, so a wipe-down in the monthly round is cooling engineering, not housekeeping. The difference is a few degrees that appear on no calculation - and a few degrees is precisely the margin a summer peak asks for.

Overhaul Planning on Evidence

The ninth frame is large enough that its overhauls deserve scheduling rather than surprise. The evidence base is ordinary: annual oil samples trended year on year, temperatures and vibration compared against the commissioning baseline, seal lips inspected before a weep reaches the floor. When the trends bend - bronze rising in the sample, a temperature creeping against the baseline - the overhaul window is chosen on the plant's terms, in a planned outage, with the parts already on the shelf.

The parts themselves deserve the same planning. One seal kit, one breather, one gasket set held against the frame number covers the likely events of a decade, and costs a fraction of the overtime a forced outage spends. Plants that keep that small drawer open plan their overhauls; plants without it attend them.

Transport, Lifting and the Last Hundred Metres

A unit of this mass is moved, not carried, and the last hundred metres from the stores to the plinth are where delivery days are won. The route is walked first: door widths, floor ratings, the turn at the corridor end. The lift uses the points shown on the outline drawing and nothing else - no sling around a shaft, no chain on a foot - with a spreader where the drawing asks for one. The driven shaft travels separately, greased and capped, in the same vehicle rather than a later one.

Nothing about this is elaborate; all of it is written down in half a page. The alternative is decided at the crane by whoever is closest, and the crate's paint - and occasionally its feet - records the decision for years. Half a page of plan keeps the unit's first impression of the plant a courteous one.

The First Month, Watched Properly

The month after commissioning is when a heavy unit settles, and a short watch list catches everything that settles wrong. Holding-down bolts re-torqued once, after the first weeks of thermal cycling. Oil level confirmed weekly in the early changes. Case temperature logged at the same point each visit against the commissioning figure. An early oil sample taken sooner than the annual one, to catch any running-in debris while it is still a story about bedding-in.

After that first month the unit joins the ordinary inspection round, and the exceptional attention can stop. The point of the watch is narrow and worth stating: a ninth frame that comes through its first month level, tight, full and cool is a unit that will spend the next decade proving the decision to buy it right.

An Enquiry Worth the Paper

Heavy duties are quoted quickly when the paper answers the selection engineer's questions in one pass. The driven machine and its load pattern, with breakaway torque and starts per hour in writing. Motor power, speed and starting method. Output speed and the tolerance the process accepts. Hours per day, counted honestly over a real week. The ambient at the position - heat, dust, moisture - stated plainly. Driven shaft diameter, keyway and usable length. Mounting position, motor orientation, rotation direction, any overhang beyond the shaft, and the documentation the project file expects.

Sent complete, that enquiry returns a firm quotation and an outline drawing the layout bolts in without a query round. Sent thin, it returns questions, and at this frame every round of questions is a week the schedule had already spent. The ninth frame is the strongest argument of the band for staying standard - provided the paperwork that brings it in is as solid as the unit itself.

Selection Example: Sinter machine drive in an integrated steelworks bay

Take a 90 kW motor at 1485 rpm turning the sinter strand at 15 rpm. The ratio follows directly: 1485 / 15 = 99, so a ratio near i=99 is drawn, and the service factor is set by the continuous heat of the strand and the cost of an unplanned stop rather than by the running load alone. In this case the ninth frame carries that ratio with the bearing reserve a machine that never stops once lit demands, and the footed case holds the drive line true through years of heat and dust. Work through the same three steps - speed, output speed, torque - and the model number falls out; we verify it against the duty class before quoting.

Applications in Industry

Asphalt plant aggregate feeder

An asphalt plant powers its aggregate feeders with reducers in outdoor, dusty conditions. The cast-iron housing and standard paint finish have come through several winters without refurbishment.

Fertiliser granulator drum

A fertiliser producer drives granulator drums with gear units. The slow, high-torque rotation needed to tumble the granules is a natural fit, and the torque-arm option avoids a heavy base frame.

Buyer Questions and Answers

Do you offer food-grade or washdown versions?

We can supply food-grade lubricant, FKM (Viton) oil seals and stainless fasteners for washdown areas. These units are common in bakeries, dairies and packaging halls where hygiene and moisture are daily concerns.

How do I install the unit on an inclined conveyor?

Mount the unit with the output shaft horizontal or as recommended for your mounting position, and choose the anti-run-back option so the loaded belt cannot drive the gearbox backwards when power is cut. Tell us the incline angle when you order.
