Every frame range has a size that quietly becomes the default - big enough for real process duty, small enough to remain an easy install. In the right-angle branch of the MC industrial family that unit is the MC3RLSF03 bevel-helical gear unit, foot mounted: one step above the entry frame, carrying wider gear faces, a deeper sump and a stouter output shaft, while keeping the ninety-degree input that makes the branch worth choosing in the first place.
It is the size plants standardise on. Once a maintenance crew knows one 03 - its oil volume, its breather position, its foot pattern - every new machine on the drawing board gets one too, and the spares shelf quietly organises itself around the type.
The step from 02 to 03 buys three things, and a good enquiry names which of them the duty actually needs. First, torque capacity: wider faces and thicker shaft sections transmit more at the same working stress. Second, thermal headroom: a larger case sheds the heat of continuous running without ancillary cooling in most ambiences. Third, margin for the ugly minute - the jammed chain, the bridged hopper, the restart after a weekend of settling - which is where undersized frames spend their reputations.
A duty that needs only the first item may belong on the frame below at a lower price. Where two or three coincide - a dryer that turns all summer, a conveyor that takes a shock every second revolution, an agitator that starts into settled liquor - the 03 is the honest answer.
The type string compresses the whole mechanical agreement. Read it once, carefully, against the outline drawing.
| MC | Industrial gear unit family of multi-stage construction for plant duty |
| 3 | Three successive reductions - bevel corner first, then two helical stages |
| R | Bevel-helical design with the input shaft set at right angles to the output |
| L | Horizontal mounting position on its foot plane, shafts level |
| S | Solid keyed output shaft for standard machine couplings and sprockets |
| F | Foot mounting onto a prepared horizontal bedplate |
| 03 | Second frame of the bevel-helical band (02-09) - the working middle of the small sizes |
Ratio and motor orientation stay outside the string. At this frame they are worth one paragraph in the enquiry each: the ratio because three stages give a wide choice and the wrong one shifts every internal diameter, the orientation because a right-angle case has more plausible arrangements than most, and each one moves the breather, dipstick and drain.
The defining habit of a bevel-helical unit is that its most delicate mesh lives at the fast end. The bevel pair takes the motor's full speed and bends the path ninety degrees in one bite; the helical stages then work at progressively calmer speeds, where generous faces and deep ratios come cheaply. Look after the corner and the rest of the case looks after itself.
Looking after the corner means three concrete things: the oil is kept correct and clean, because a bevel mesh is unforgiving of grit; the contact pattern is photographed at commissioning and kept in the file; and any vibration reading taken later is compared against that first healthy baseline rather than against memory. None of it costs more than a shift's attention in year one.
Bored-output vertical drives on tanks and deep pump lines serving:
What these duties share is consequence: when any of them stops, a line upstream and downstream stops with it. The 03 is chosen where the cost of a stop outgrows the price gap between frames - which, spread over a decade, is the cheapest insurance the machine budget buys.
Installation discipline for a right-angle unit has one extra chapter. The motor coupling sits across the corner, so a misalignment shows up as an axial rocking of the bevel mesh rather than the obvious radial symptom of a parallel drive - easier to miss, and more expensive when missed. Align the motor coupling cold to the gauge values, then read it again warm; set the backlash check of the coupling per its manual; and verify the output coupling alignment to the driven shaft with the feet finally torqued, shims seated, no bolt drawn down onto a proud pad.
File both sets of readings. An 03 that starts its life with a documented, honest alignment is the unit still running quietly when the rest of the plant has forgotten which machine it drives.
The sump is the diary of the case. At every scheduled change, look before draining: a milky film means water ingress and a breather that has stopped doing its job; a dark, burnt smell means the unit ran hotter than any log admits; bright glitter on the drain-plug magnet means an open-and-look decision this week, not next quarter. Sample at the same weekday each season so the trend, not the single reading, tells the story.
A two-degree climb in sump temperature that persists for a month outranks one heroic spike. With a written trend, overhauls are planned from evidence, bearings arrive on schedule, and the next 03 ordered for a neighbouring machine is specified with twenty years of hindsight folded into the drawing.
Assemble before sending: motor rating, speed and starting method; output speed and its tolerance; absorbed torque at steady running with the worst breakaway written separately; duty cycle, hours per day and starts per hour; the honest worst-case ambient, radiant heat included; mounting position with the motor side named; kept shaft dimensions where existing couplings survive the project; overhung load and its lever arm if a pulley or sprocket is involved; paint, nameplate and documentation requirements.
Send it complete and the reply is a firm, orderable quotation in one pass. Every line left out comes back later as an assumption - and the 03, like every good frame, deserves better than assumptions.

All frames in the table belong to one industrial family. P = helical parallel-shaft, R = bevel-helical right-angle; the low-speed shaft is solid (S) or hollow (H), mounted on feet (F) or a torque arm (T).
Take a 15 kW motor at 1465 rpm turning the return strand head shaft at 29 rpm. The ratio follows directly: 1465 / 29 = 50.5, so a ratio near i=50 is drawn, and the service factor is raised to cover a chain that jams under clinker spill and must be broken free at restart. In this case one frame above the 02 carries that shock with room to spare, and the wider bevel stage keeps the first mesh calm through years of dusty air. That single division gives the catalogue ratio; the service factor for your duty class is then applied to the torque, and the frame size follows.

Sizing flow: motor speed, target output speed, torque, service factor.
A port terminal selected heavy-duty gear units for the travel drives of its ship loader. Salt-laden air is handled by the heavy-duty coating option, and spare seal kits are held on site for the annual service.
A sugar mill drives its cane carriers with industrial gear units sized for fully loaded starts. The generous torque margin covers cane jams, and the right-angle build keeps the motor clear of the carrier slat path.
Every unit is run in on the bench before packing. Noise, temperature rise and backlash are recorded and the test sheet travels with the shipment, so you can file it with your incoming-inspection records.
We normally work on 30% deposit and 70% against the bill-of-lading copy for sea freight, or 100% before dispatch for small orders. Other terms can be discussed for framework or repeat business.
